Rights by status
Read the row matching the status you would hold. Domestic citizenship rules remain country-specific.
HK/Macau/Taiwan permanent residents (Chinese citizens) may enter and reside in the mainland freely (Home Return Permit / Mainland Travel Permit).
Residence Permit for HK/Macau/Taiwan Residents (since Sep 2018) after 6 months residing in the mainland with work, residence, or study. Taiwan Settlement Permit converts to mainland household registration (hukou).
Indefinite mainland residence for any purpose. Reverse direction strictly gated: mainland-to-HK/Macau settlement is a Mainland-administered quota system (One-Way Permit, 150/day incl. 60 for right-of-abode-by-descent and 30 for long-separated spouses) limited to family-reunion classes per the NIA's June 2026 notice (spouses separated 3+ yrs, minor children, elderly-care cases). Taiwan runs separate, security-screened residence-then-settlement tracks for HK/Macau residents and Mainland spouses.

Scope notes
Asymmetric toward the mainland; permit mechanics only. Context: HK and Macau PR via 7 years' ordinary residence is ORDINARY immigration law open to anyone - it is not a privileged lane and is deliberately not mapped as an arrangement here.
