Citizenship connected to birth in São Tomé and Príncipe

A person born in São Tomé and Príncipe is of origin nationality when a parent is São-tomense, when the parents are stateless or of unknown nationality, or when foreign parents reside in the territory and are not in the service of another state. Foundling and parental-status conditions remain statutory.

Naturalization after five years of legal residence

The Government may naturalize a foreign adult or stateless person after at least five years of legal residence, Portuguese or national-language knowledge, clean criminal record, national-security clearance and means of subsistence. The grant is by government decree after a Public Prosecutor prior review.
