A person born in Nauru is a citizen at birth if either parent is a citizen. A person born in Nauru to non-citizen parents may later apply after twenty continuous years of residence. Foundling and otherwise-stateless birth situations are also protected under the constitutional and statutory framework.

A foreign spouse may apply after seven continuous years of lawful marriage and residence with the Nauruan spouse, subject to character, health, commitment to reside and no-criminal-conviction conditions. Cabinet may waive the residence period.
