Citizenship at birth through a Belgian parent

Birth to a Belgian parent creates Belgian nationality. Birth in Belgium alone to two foreign parents is not unrestricted jus soli.

A child of a Belgian parent is Belgian under the nationality code, subject to registration rules for birth abroad.

Nationality declaration after five years residence

Adults with five years legal residence may apply for Belgian nationality by declaration if they meet integration, language, and economic participation conditions. Naturalization by parliament remains a separate exceptional track. Not automatic after five years.
