Birth to an Armenian parent creates nationality regardless of birthplace. Birth in Armenia alone to foreign parents is not unrestricted jus soli; territorial birth confers citizenship only to prevent statelessness.
A person of Armenian ethnic origin may acquire citizenship through a simplified procedure with no residence requirement and no language or history examination; Armenian church baptismal records are accepted as proof of origin.
A spouse of an Armenian is exempt from the language test and residency, on about two years of marriage or a common child.
A child of an Armenian citizen parent is an Armenian citizen (jus sanguinis), regardless of birthplace.
Ordinary applicants generally need about three years of residence plus language and constitutional knowledge; grant is discretionary. Spouses, parents of Armenian minors, and persons of Armenian descent are exempted from the residence requirement.
